Prepare the interlaced cross
Inspect every woven opening with a soft brush, wash the piece and let water drain from the crossings. Apply Grey Surface Primer with alternating diagonal passes so both sides of each interlaced band receive a thin coat.
Expected result
The neutral ground covers every crossing and inner wall without closing the openwork.
Points to watch
Do not bridge the woven gaps or leave a dusty patch in the centre knot.

1. Prepare the model

Inspect every woven opening with a soft brush, wash the piece and let water drain from the crossings. Apply Grey Surface Primer with alternating diagonal passes so both sides of each interlaced band receive a thin coat.
Expected result
The neutral ground covers every crossing and inner wall without closing the openwork.
Points to watch
Do not bridge the woven gaps or leave a dusty patch in the centre knot.

2. Apply the base colours

Warm foundation
Where to paint: Ivory cross body, lettering and stepped sides
Zandri Dustcitadel · 21-16
Build Zandri Dust in two thin coats, brushing from each arm's centre towards its pointed end. Use the side of the brush on the outer walls and leave the raised knotwork untouched.
Expected result
The cross body is evenly warm and opaque on the front, edges and visible sidewalls.
Points to watch
Do not fill the open cut-outs or round off the crisp points with heavy paint.
Gold body
Where to paint: Raised gold knotwork and border
Retributor Armourcitadel · 21-35
Load a small pointed brush with Retributor Armour and follow one strand until it passes under the next. Resume it after the crossing; this keeps the weave readable and the surrounding ivory clean.
Expected result
Every strand is gold from end to end, and the over-under pattern remains easy to trace.
Points to watch
Do not paint across the recessed gaps between strands.

3. Build the shadows

Age and separation

Agrax Earthshadecitadel · 24-15
Run a narrow line of Agrax Earthshade through the joins, stopping at each open cut-out. Under the words, pull the shade along the lower edge of the letters so the text stays legible.
Expected result
The construction and lettering are readable, while the ivory planes remain clean rather than tea-stained.
Points to watch
Do not coat the whole face with shade or leave tide marks around the words.
Knot depth
Where to paint: Raised gold knotwork and border
Reikland Fleshshadecitadel · 24-24
Place Reikland Fleshshade at each underpass and draw it a few millimetres along the disappearing strand. Wipe the brush before softening the outer edge of that shadow.
Expected result
The braid visibly passes over and under itself without brown pools in the open cut-outs.
Points to watch
Do not shade the full length of every strand; the gold must remain luminous.

4. Build the highlights

Feather Ushabti Bone across the lit half of each broad plane. Finish with short Screaming Skull touches on the sharpest tips and the upper strokes of the raised lettering.
Expected result
The ivory reads as carved material with a clear light direction, and every word remains intact.
Points to watch
Do not drybrush across the gold braid or turn every edge pure white.
Polished crossings

Stormhost Silvercitadel · 22-75
Draw Liberator Gold along the upper ridge of each visible strand, breaking the line wherever it passes underneath. Add three or four pinpoints of Stormhost Silver at the central crossings only.
Expected result
The knot has crisp polished high points, but the gold still looks warm and aged beside the ivory.
Points to watch
Do not use silver on the outer ivory points or along every gold edge.
