Musk ox — dark brown and cream

Deep brown hanging fur surrounds a warm cream saddle patch. Ivory-to-brown horns, a dark muzzle and subtle hoof wear preserve the musk ox's heavy, natural appearance.

Prepare the deep fur relief
Remove supports carefully around the horn tips and hooves. Wash the print using the method appropriate to its material, complete any required curing and let it dry. Brush dust out of the deep fur grooves. Apply Black Surface Primer in thin coats from different directions, reaching the underside without filling the texture.
Expected result
All surfaces are primed and dry, with open grooves between the locks.
Points to watch
Do not sand the fur smooth or allow primer to collect in the mouth.

1. Prepare the model

Prepare the deep fur relief

Brush dust out of the deep fur grooves. Apply Black Surface Primer in thin coats from different directions, reaching the underside without filling the texture.
Expected result
All surfaces are primed and dry, with open grooves between the locks.
Points to watch
Do not sand the fur smooth or allow primer to collect in the mouth.

2. Apply the base colours

A deep brown coat

Add a small amount of Abaddon Black to Rhinox Hide. Apply the dark brown mix in two thin coats, working it between the locks as well as over their raised surfaces. Keep the underside and lower hanging fur dark. Leave the saddle area for its separate warm base.
Expected result
Brown covers the coat evenly, including the recessed and hidden areas.
Points to watch
Do not leave grey resin or primer showing between the locks.
The pale saddle patch

Mix Zandri Dust and Ushabti Bone equally. Paint the pale saddle with several thin coats, following the image and the existing locks. Let its lower edge end irregularly along the fur tips. Keep the heavy forelock and most of the flanks brown; this is a saddle-shaped patch, not an entirely cream back.
Expected result
The cream patch has opaque coverage and its edge follows the sculpted locks.
Points to watch
Do not draw a straight stripe across the fur or extend cream over the rump.
Warm horn bases and dark tips
Where to paint: Ivory horns with dark tips

Paint both horns with Zandri Dust, reaching their inner curves beside the face. Cover the tips with Rhinox Hide. Between the two colours, use a thin mix of both to begin a gradual transition. Leave the sculpted ridges visible rather than filling them with thick pale paint.
Expected result
Both horns are fully painted, with matching pale roots and dark tips.
Points to watch
Do not paint the horns metallic or leave their undersides black.

Mix Abaddon Black with a little Eshin Grey for the bare muzzle and outer lips. Paint the eyes with Rhinox Hide. Keep the mouth cavity very dark with Rhinox Hide mixed with black, then paint the tongue and visible inner lip with Rhinox Hide and a little Cadian Fleshtone. The pink should be muted, not bright flesh.
Expected result
The dark muzzle, brown eyes and brown-pink tongue are distinct from the fur.
Points to watch
Do not cover the nostrils or paint new teeth into the mouth.
Four dark hooves
Where to paint: Four dark cloven hooves

Use an equal mix of Abaddon Black and Rhinox Hide on all four hooves. Turn the figure to reach the far pair and the inner faces. Keep the cleft between each pair of hoof halves black. Paint only the hard hoof surfaces, leaving the fur above them brown.
Expected result
All four hooves have the same dark base and clear central clefts.
Points to watch
Do not mistake the long fur tips for extra toes.

3. Build the highlights

Warm light on the heavy locks

Mix Rhinox Hide and Gorthor Brown equally, then highlight the raised faces of the locks with strokes following their length. Leave their roots and the gaps dark. Increase Gorthor Brown on the head and upper shoulders; add a little Baneblade Brown for a few narrow top edges. Keep the lowest hanging fur subdued and soften abrupt colour changes with the middle mix.
Expected result
Individual locks are readable, with the strongest brown highlights near the head.
Points to watch
Do not drybrush the whole coat equally or add hair finer than the sculpt.
Cream fur with warm shadows
Where to paint: Cream saddle across the upper back

Layer Ushabti Bone along the pale locks, leaving the sandy base in their deeper grooves. Add Screaming Skull gradually toward the top of the back. Use smaller, softer highlights where the cream patch descends onto the sides. Keep the lower boundary broken along the original lock ends, with no new white stripe.
Expected result
The saddle looks cream rather than white, with depth between the locks.
Points to watch
Do not fill the shadow grooves with the lightest colour.

Layer Ushabti Bone over the pale horn surfaces, leaving Zandri Dust in the ridges and on the inner curves. Add a little Screaming Skull for narrow highlights on the broad roots and upper edges. Smooth the transition to Rhinox Hide with thin intermediate mixes. Keep the tips dark and the painted highlights restrained, like horn rather than polished metal.
Expected result
Both horns have matching warm ivory, smooth transitions and distinct dark tips.
Points to watch
Do not add bright rings or paint the horn texture as metallic scratches.

4. Paint the details

Subtle wear on the hoof edges

Mix Eshin Grey with Rhinox Hide and lightly highlight the front planes of the hooves. Add a little Baneblade Brown for a few short worn edges near the ground. Keep these marks uneven and small, leaving most of each hoof dark. Check the far pair as well as the front pair.
Expected result
The hooves remain dark, with modest worn edges and black clefts.
Points to watch
Do not turn the hoof tips white or silver.
Final touches to eyes, nose and tongue

Use black with a little Eshin Grey to soften the light across the top of the muzzle. Add a tiny amount of Screaming Skull for one narrow nose reflection, keeping the nostrils black. Paint small black pupils and one pale catchlight in each brown eye. Lighten the tongue and inner lower lip with their brown-pink base plus a little Cadian Fleshtone; keep the mouth cavity dark.
Expected result
The face has small clear reflections, a muted tongue and a dark open mouth.
Points to watch
Do not add white eye outlines, bright pink lips or excessive shine.
