Clean pale midtones
Where to paint: Ivory uniform
Rakarth Fleshcitadel · 21-27
Restore Rakarth Flesh on the broad cloth faces after the sepia dries. Leave a narrow warm shadow beneath the insignia, straps and fold overlaps.
Expected result
The pale cloth is clean without losing separation beneath the accessories.
Points to watch
Do not erase the shaded folds at the waist.
Bring the face back to life
Where to paint: Face, hands and hair
Cadian Fleshtonecitadel · 22-36
Layer Cadian Fleshtone over the forehead, cheeks, nose bridge and tops of the fingers. Leave the shaded eye sockets, mouth line and finger gaps visible rather than repainting the whole face flat.
Expected result
Warm skin emerges above the shadows with the stern expression intact.
Points to watch
Do not bury the eyelids under a thick layer.
Clean gold faces
Where to paint: Gold insignia and staff
Retributor Armourcitadel · 21-35
Restore Retributor Armour on the raised gold faces once the shade dries. Leave the roots of the staff rays and spaces between chest symbols warm and dark.
Expected result
The gold faces are clean and the relief retains deep separation.
Points to watch
Do not coat the braided cords with this metallic layer.
Soft light over black cloth
Where to paint: Black coat and boots
Eshin Greycitadel · 22-51
Lahmian Mediumcitadel · 27-02
Thin Eshin Grey with Lahmian Medium to a transparent glaze. Pull colour towards the upper-front light on the sleeves and broad folds, narrowing successive passes while leaving the deepest cloth black.
Expected result
The coat has soft grey volume without losing its black identity.
Points to watch
Do not add fabric fibres or a grainy drybrush texture.
Smooth pale cloth light
Where to paint: Ivory uniform
Lahmian Mediumcitadel · 27-02
Pallid Wych Fleshcitadel · 22-58
Make Pallid Wych Flesh translucent with Lahmian Medium. Build light on the chest and upward-facing folds with short glazes, tapering into the warm Rakarth Flesh beside the belt and gold trim.
Expected result
Pale highlights blend softly into the warmer cloth shadows.
Points to watch
Do not leave white tide marks beside the gold piping.
Rounded red shoulders
Where to paint: Red shoulders, cuffs and sash
Lahmian Mediumcitadel · 27-02
Mephiston Redcitadel · 21-03
Dilute Mephiston Red with Lahmian Medium and glaze towards the upper shoulder curves and outward cuff folds. Let Khorne Red remain along the lower trim and in the shaded cuff creases.
Expected result
The red curves through a soft transition instead of a flat block.
Points to watch
Do not lighten the whole sash as much as the shoulders.
Smooth facial transitions
Where to paint: Face, hands and hair
Lahmian Mediumcitadel · 27-02
Cadian Fleshtonecitadel · 22-36
Glaze translucent Cadian Fleshtone mixed with Lahmian Medium from the shaded cheek towards its lit crest. Repeat on the temples and hand backs, leaving the eye sockets and mouth line intact.
Expected result
The skin transitions are smooth without erasing the expression.
Points to watch
Do not turn the face into a polished plastic surface.
Readable dark folds
Where to paint: Black coat and boots
Eshin Greycitadel · 22-51
Use thin Eshin Grey on the raised sleeve and knee folds, leaving black on either side. On the boots, keep the strokes shorter and sharper to distinguish leather from the softer coat cloth.
Expected result
Dark folds are visible and the boots feel firmer than the coat.
Points to watch
Do not fill the broad black coat panels with grey.
Pale fold crests
Where to paint: Ivory uniform
Pallid Wych Fleshcitadel · 22-58
Layer Pallid Wych Flesh on the upper chest and outward fold crests. Use the side of the tip along the long inner-panel edges, leaving the lower folds warm and shadowed.
Expected result
The uniform looks pale and clean with readable warm shadows.
Points to watch
Do not paint over the dark slots in the shoulder flap.
Brighter red crests
Where to paint: Red shoulders, cuffs and sash
Mephiston Redcitadel · 21-03
Apply thin Mephiston Red to the shoulder crowns and upper cuff and sash folds. Keep a strip of Khorne Red beside the lower gold trim and in the deeper sash folds.
Expected result
The red has a clean light side while the folds stay deep.
Points to watch
Do not cover gold studs with red.
Light inside the lining
Where to paint: Purple lining
Xereus Purplecitadel · 22-09
Layer Xereus Purple onto the outward collar corners and turned lining tips. Let it fade into Naggaroth Night as the cloth curves inward beside the neck and coat folds.
Expected result
The purple lining is visible without becoming brighter than the face.
Points to watch
Do not paint violet highlights across the gold edging.
Gold edges and relief
Where to paint: Gold insignia and staff
Liberator Goldcitadel · 22-71
Catch the upper insignia edges, staff rays and light-facing piping with Liberator Gold. Use short touches around the face and broader, dimmer accents on the lower coat trim.
Expected result
The upper gold details catch light while lower trim stays quieter.
Points to watch
Do not draw equally bright gold lines around the entire coat.
Steel reflections
Where to paint: Steel chains and fittings
Ironbreakercitadel · 22-59
Add Ironbreaker to the upper gun edges and outward chain links. Touch the brows and cheekbones of both shin skulls, leaving their sockets dark and their lower jaws quieter.
Expected result
The gun, chain and shin fittings have crisp selective reflections.
Points to watch
Do not fill the skull eye sockets with silver.
Leather edge wear
Where to paint: Brown straps and cases
Gorthor Browncitadel · 22-47
Use Gorthor Brown for short strokes along the top strap edges and corners of the cases. Keep the marks softer and less reflective than the adjoining steel buckles.
Expected result
A few worn edges distinguish the brown leather from the black coat.
Points to watch
Do not add large scratches across the case faces.
Light on the face and hands
Where to paint: Face, hands and hair
Kislev Fleshcitadel · 22-37
Layer Kislev Flesh in small areas on the brow, nose bridge, cheekbones and upper knuckles. Leave the cheeks' lower slopes and the finger sides at the warmer previous tone.
Expected result
The head and hands have a clear light side without becoming chalky.
Points to watch
Do not trace every facial wrinkle in pale paint.
Muted green light
Where to paint: Green equipment panels
Caliban Greencitadel · 21-12
Warpstone Glowcitadel · 22-23
Add a little Warpstone Glow to Caliban Green until the mix is only slightly brighter. Layer it on the upper gun panel and top arc of the case band, leaving the framed borders dark.
Expected result
The green has a restrained light side, not an emerald glow.
Points to watch
Do not brighten the whole gun housing.
Pale bone and page edges
Where to paint: Staff skull and book pages
Ushabti Bonecitadel · 22-32
Layer Ushabti Bone over the skull forehead and cheekbones, leaving its sockets and tooth gaps shaded. Brush lightly along the page edges without painting across the chain.
Expected result
The skull and paper are pale with warm age in their recesses.
Points to watch
Do not turn the skull teeth into a solid white bar.
Light on the braided cords
Where to paint: Ceremonial cords
Ushabti Bonecitadel · 22-32
Touch Ushabti Bone across the tops of the ochre twists, leaving the grooves brown. Pull a few short strokes towards the tassel ends; the result should look like woven cord, not silver wire.
Expected result
The braid reads clearly with a soft, non-metallic highlight.
Points to watch
Do not drybrush the surrounding coat.
Sharper dark-material accents
Where to paint: Black coat and boots
Add narrow Dawnstone marks within the earlier Eshin Grey on the upper boot creases and outer collar corners. Keep the long coat folds at the softer grey stage.
Expected result
Boots and collar gain sharper accents while the coat stays soft.
Points to watch
Do not outline the whole black hem in pale grey.
Small facial accents
Where to paint: Face, hands and hair
Pallid Wych Fleshcitadel · 22-58
Kislev Fleshcitadel · 22-37
Lighten Kislev Flesh with Pallid Wych Flesh to a pale warm skin tone. Place very small accents on the nose tip, upper cheekbones and leading knuckles, inside the previous highlights.
Expected result
Tiny pale accents draw attention to the living face and hands.
Points to watch
Do not paint pores or white lines across the forehead.
The brightest pale cloth
Where to paint: Ivory uniform
White Scarcitadel · 22-57
Touch White Scar to the upper collar fold and a short chest crease beside the gold insignia. Leave the long lower panels at the previous softer ivory highlight.
Expected result
The pale cloth is brightest near the face rather than at the feet.
Points to watch
Do not edge every long panel in pure white.
Small warm red accents
Where to paint: Red shoulders, cuffs and sash
Wild Rider Redcitadel · 22-06
Place small Wild Rider Red touches within the Mephiston Red on the top shoulder corners and outward cuff crests. Leave the broad panels and sash mostly unchanged.
Expected result
A few warm accents lift the red near the face and hands.
Points to watch
Do not create an orange border around the shoulders.
Gold focal reflections
Where to paint: Gold insignia and staff
Stormhost Silvercitadel · 22-75
With a nearly unloaded tip, touch Stormhost Silver to the chest insignia corners and a few highest ray tips. Keep these points within the gold highlights and smaller than the face highlights.
Expected result
The gold has tiny bright flashes but remains unmistakably gold.
Points to watch
Do not put silver on the cloth cords.
Tiny steel accents
Where to paint: Steel chains and fittings
Stormhost Silvercitadel · 22-75
Put a small Stormhost Silver glint on the upper gun corner, one forward chain link and the brow of the front shin skull. Leave the other metal at the Ironbreaker stage.
Expected result
Only selected steel corners catch the brightest light.
Points to watch
Do not make the shin skull brighter than the face.
