Dachshund — black and tan

A deep black coat carries compact tan markings on the brow, muzzle, chest and paws. Soft fur reflections and small eye and nose glints keep the dachshund natural above its subdued grey plinth.

Clean and prime the figure
Remove support marks without thinning the ears, tail or claws. Wash the print as required for its material, finish any necessary curing and let it dry completely. Remove dust from the paws and plinth. Apply thin coats of Black Surface Primer from several angles, reaching beneath the belly and inside the legs.
Expected result
Dry primer covers all surfaces without hiding the fine relief.
Points to watch
Do not fill the narrow grooves around the eyes and toes with primer.

1. Prepare the model

2. Apply the base colours

Cover the black fur with two thin coats of Abaddon Black. On the inner ears, add a little Rhinox Hide to the black for a subtle warm brown. Paint the underside of the body as carefully as the back; leave the planned tan areas for the next step.
Expected result
The black coat is opaque and the inner ears are only slightly warmer.
Points to watch
Do not make the ears bright brown or leave the belly as bare primer.
Place the tan markings

Mix Mournfang Brown and XV-88 equally. Build the tan areas with thin coats, following the reference: two small brow spots, a warm muzzle and chest, and tan lower paws. Include the visible inner rear legs and the tiny tail-tip marking. Keep the shapes compact; refine their borders with black if necessary.
Expected result
The tan markings match the image and remain clearly separated from the black coat.
Points to watch
Do not join the brow spots into a band or paint the whole tail tan.
Dark nose, eyes and claws

Paint the nose, mouth line and claws with Abaddon Black. Use Rhinox Hide on the visible eye surfaces, keeping their dark outlines narrow. Turn the model to reach the far eye and the claws behind the front paws. Let the paint dry before adding the small reflections later.
Expected result
Both eyes and all visible claws are painted, with a clean nose outline.
Points to watch
Do not add white sclera or enlarge the sculpted eyes.
A quiet grey plinth
Where to paint: Original grey oval plinth

Paint the top of the plinth with Eshin Grey. Mix Eshin Grey with an equal amount of Abaddon Black for the stepped rim, and use black in the narrow groove between its tiers. Work around the feet with the tip of the brush. Keep the original base shape and texture unchanged.
Expected result
The top is grey, the rim darker, and no primer remains around the feet.
Points to watch
Do not add metallic paint, rocks or a new pedestal.

3. Build the highlights

Add a little Eshin Grey to Abaddon Black and build soft highlights on the upper curves of the body. Follow the existing short fur with small strokes; keep the sides and belly much darker. Add a trace of Administratum Grey for a few narrow accents on the head and shoulder. Blend harsh lines back with the black-grey mix. Warm the ear highlights with a little Rhinox Hide.
Expected result
The body has rounded volume but still looks black, not grey or metallic.
Points to watch
Do not draw long hairs, stripes or a bright outline around the whole dog.
Warm tan highlights
Where to paint: Tan brows, muzzle, chest and paws

Layer an equal mix of XV-88 and Balor Brown over the lit parts of the tan patches, leaving the deeper brown under the muzzle and between the toes. Add a little Ushabti Bone for the front of the muzzle and a few chest and paw highlights. At the colour boundaries, use a few very short strokes to suggest fur without widening the markings.
Expected result
The tan stays warm, with the brightest accents near the face.
Points to watch
Do not turn the chest white or use evenly spaced painted hair lines.
A clean plinth edge

Administratum Greycitadel · 22-50
Add a little Administratum Grey to Eshin Grey. Lightly pick out the top texture and paint a thin highlight along the upper rim where it faces the light. Keep the lower tier dark and correct any uneven edge with the base colour. The plinth should support the figure visually, not become a shiny metal object.
Expected result
The edge is neat and the grey plinth remains less prominent than the dog.
Points to watch
Do not outline every tier in pale grey.

Brighten the lower iris with Rhinox Hide and a little Mournfang Brown, then place a small black pupil in each eye. Add one tiny Screaming Skull catchlight to the same upper side of both eyes. Use black mixed with a little Eshin Grey for the top of the nose and a restrained edge on each claw. Finish with a very small pale reflection on the nose, keeping the nostrils black.
Expected result
Both eyes look the same way, with small reflections and distinct black nostrils.
Points to watch
Do not fill the eyes with white or make the claws silver.
