Prepare the Crown of Thorns relief
Use a soft brush to free the thorns and hair grooves from dust, wash the panel and let the deepest recesses dry. Apply Grey Surface Primer diagonally from each corner so the thorn tips are covered without receiving a thick frontal coat.
Expected result
The face and thorn crown carry an even light ground, while the eyes, hair strands and ornament remain clear.
Points to watch
Do not blunt the thorns or leave wash water trapped beneath the hair.

1. Prepare the model

Use a soft brush to free the thorns and hair grooves from dust, wash the panel and let the deepest recesses dry. Apply Grey Surface Primer diagonally from each corner so the thorn tips are covered without receiving a thick frontal coat.

2. Apply the base colours

Place Abaddon Black into the deepest locks first, then connect them with thinner strokes that follow the carved strands. Leave a hairline-thin flesh boundary around the forehead and fingers.
Expected result
Hair and beard form one dark frame around the face while individual carved locks remain visible.
Points to watch
Do not paint the crown of thorns black or close the narrow gap between beard and hand.

Cover the wood and thorns with Zandri Dust. Once dry, draw Agrax Earthshade along the carved grain and into the crossings between thorns, wiping the broad beam faces clean.
Expected result
The cross looks warm and aged, and every thorn is distinct against the black hair and skin.
Points to watch
Do not pool brown shade along the outline of the face or inside the eye sockets.

Lay Deep Red along the direction of each cloth fold. After it dries, tuck Nuln Oil only beneath overlapping folds and under the hand, then soften the outer edge with a damp clean brush.
Expected result
The robe reads as burgundy cloth with deep folds, not as a flat red patch or black recess.
Points to watch
Keep the red off the blue background and do not outline the whole silhouette with black wash.

Do not bridge the recessed line separating the blue field from the gold frame.

3. Build the shadows

Work with a nearly unloaded brush. Draw Reikland Fleshshade from the brow into each eye socket, then place a separate narrow shadow beneath the nose, lower lip and fingers.

Do not fill the eyes or let a tide mark dry across the flat cheek.

4. Build the highlights

Restore the skin with thin Cadian Fleshtone, leaving the placed shadows visible. Add Kislev Flesh in short soft marks on the nose, cheekbones, lower lip and the two nearest knuckles.

The face has a quiet warm volume; the nose and cheekbones are lighter than the jaw but not chalky.
Points to watch
Keep the highlights away from the hairline and do not draw a bright stripe around every finger.

Block the raised frame with Retributor Armour, working a short section at a time. When the shape is solid, touch Liberator Gold to the upper half of each leaf and to the outermost beads.

Do not drybrush across the frame; stray gold specks will dirty the blue field and burgundy robe.
