Black armour and burgundy robes are lifted with restrained grey and soft red highlights. Ivory details, gold trim and distinct steel and leather equipment give the Chaplain a sombre ceremonial finish.

Prepare the miniature and prime it black
Remove support marks carefully around the chain, staff, mask and robe edges. Wash a filament print with mild soapy water; clean and cure resin according to its manufacturer. Let the model dry completely. Apply Vallejo Black Surface Primer in thin coats from several angles, reaching behind the robes and under the arms. Let it dry.
Expected result
The dry primer reaches the recesses without filling the teeth or chain links.
Points to watch
Do not paint damp resin or round off the fine sculpted trim.

1. Prepare the model

Let the model dry completely. Apply Vallejo Black Surface Primer in thin coats from several angles, reaching behind the robes and under the arms. Let it dry.

2. Apply the base colours

Cover the armour with thin Abaddon Black. Once dry, mix it equally with Corvus Black and paint the upper-facing parts of the shoulder curves, shin plates and gauntlets. Keep Abaddon Black beneath the trim, between plates and behind the equipment. Build the lighter areas gradually instead of filling every panel with grey.
Expected result
The armour stays black but the upper curves are visible.
Points to watch
Do not paint the gold rims or burgundy cloth black.
Paint the burgundy cloth
Where to paint: Burgundy hood and robes

Khorne Redcitadel · 21-04
Mix three parts Khorne Red with one part Abaddon Black and apply two thin coats to all the cloth. After drying, paint Khorne Red over the broader folds, leaving the dark mix in the recesses and beneath overlapping panels. Keep the skull mask and belt clear.
Expected result
The cloth is burgundy on both sides with dark folds and clean gold borders.
Points to watch
Do not leave the robe undersides black primer or colour the holster burgundy.

3. Build the highlights

Mix a little Eshin Grey into Corvus Black. Apply narrow, soft highlights to the upper shoulder curves and front of the nearest shin, then paint finer lines on the gauntlet fingers and boot edges. Add a little Dawnstone for a few short accents at the brightest corners. Leave most lower edges unlined.
Expected result
The black armour has volume without becoming uniformly grey.
Points to watch
Avoid bright outlines around every plate and broad glossy streaks.
Build soft light along the folds

Add small amounts of Wazdakka Red to Khorne Red and layer the mix onto the upper and outward fold curves. Narrow each successive layer and let it dry. Use a touch of Screamer Pink in the final mix for the hood edge nearest the face and a few upper folds. Soften any harsh boundary with a thin Khorne Red layer.
Expected result
The folds are rounded and the cloth remains deep burgundy.
Points to watch
Do not turn the robe scarlet, orange or glossy.

4. Paint the details

Apply Zandri Dust. Shade the eye sockets, tooth gaps, rib recesses and spaces between beads with carefully thinned Rhinox Hide. Layer Ushabti Bone onto the raised surfaces, then Screaming Skull on the brow, cheekbones, top ribs and upper bead curves. Paint the tassel with narrow downward strokes, leaving its sculpted grooves darker.
Expected result
The mask is crisp, teeth and beads remain separate, and the tassel looks matte.
Points to watch
Do not paint the eye sockets bright or turn the bead cord metallic.
Finish the gold trim

Paint the gold Retributor Armour. Apply Agrax Earthshade only to the recesses and lower joins, then restore the exposed areas with the base gold after drying. Highlight upper edges with Liberator Gold. Add a little Stormhost Silver to it for tiny highlights on the halo tips and ornaments nearest the face.
Expected result
Gold stays warm, both shoulder rims match and the edges are clean.
Points to watch
Do not spread gold over the chain, pistol body or black armour centres.
Separate steel from black weapon surfaces
Where to paint: Steel pistol parts, chain and staff fittings

Paint steel Leadbelcher, shade the joints with Nuln Oil and highlight exposed edges with Ironbreaker after drying. Keep the muzzle opening black. Paint the pistol casing and staff grip Abaddon Black, highlighting their upper edges with a restrained Abaddon Black and Corvus Black mix. Preserve the gold pistol emblem and ivory skull on the staff.
Expected result
Steel is cooler than the gold and the black weapon parts remain distinct.
Points to watch
Do not paint the entire staff or pistol silver.
Paint the leather equipment
Where to paint: Brown belt, holster and pouches

Base the leather with Rhinox Hide. Apply Mournfang Brown in thin layers over the outward-facing surfaces, leaving seams and flap undersides dark. Add a little Steel Legion Drab for a few short edge highlights and small worn marks on the holster. Keep the long central surfaces darker than the edges.
Expected result
The leather is brown and matte, clearly separate from the burgundy cloth and black armour.
Points to watch
Do not paint the armoured gauntlets brown or obscure the gold buckle.

5. Finish the model

Finish the subdued base
Where to paint: Dark ground and clean black base rim

Paint the ground Rhinox Hide and the stones Eshin Grey. Lightly drybrush the upper texture with an equal mix of Eshin Grey and Dawnstone, leaving the lower ground dark. Paint the smooth rim with two thin coats of Abaddon Black. Keep dust off the robe hem.
Expected result
The feet remain readable against the ground and the rim is uniformly black.
Points to watch
Do not add new rubble, scenery or a larger pedestal.
Check all details and seal the paint
Where to paint: Dark ground and clean black base rim

Turn the model and check the robe undersides, fingers, rear equipment and both shoulder rims. Correct any colour that crosses a material boundary. Once all paint is fully dry, apply a thin coat of Stormshield without leaving pools among the beads, chain links or mask teeth.
Expected result
Every surface is finished, the mask is clear and no exposed primer remains.
Points to watch
Do not hide unfinished details under dirt or thick varnish.
