Clean and prime the sheep
Check for support scars among the curls and clear away sanding dust. Wash away residue when appropriate for the material and dry the sheep thoroughly. Apply a thin coat of Vallejo Grey Surface Primer over the body and between the legs, keeping the wool relief crisp.
Expected result
Dry primer covers the underside as well as the back.
Points to watch
Do not bury the shallow curls around the mouth.

1. Prepare the model

2. Apply the base colours

Lay in cream wool
Where to paint: Wool
Ushabti Bonecitadel · 22-32
Work Ushabti Bone into the wool in thin coats, using small strokes around the face opening. Turn the model to cover the hanging wool behind the legs.
Expected result
The fleece has an uninterrupted cream foundation.
Points to watch
Keep cream off the smooth nose and ears.
Set the brown face and legs
Where to paint: Face and legs
Dryad Barkcitadel · 21-23
Fill the exposed face and legs with Dryad Bark, bringing the colour carefully up to the cream fleece. Use the brush point inside the ears without flooding their folds.
Expected result
The dark brown areas have clean boundaries against the fleece.
Points to watch
Do not leave grey primer under the lower jaw.
Mark the small black shapes
Where to paint: Hooves and eyes
Abaddon Blackcitadel · 21-25
Apply Abaddon Black to the hooves and nose pad in a thin layer. With very little paint on the tip, fill each eyeball inside its sculpted lids.
Expected result
The hoof splits and the borders of both eyes remain visible.
Points to watch
Do not spread black over the brow ridges.

3. Build the shadows

Deepen the wool folds
Where to paint: Wool
Agrax Earthshadecitadel · 24-15
Place Agrax Earthshade into the deeper wool valleys, touching one recess at a time. Keep the top of the wool cap nearly clean so the face remains framed by light.
Expected result
The lower folds are darker without brown stains across the cap.
Points to watch
Do not let shade collect into a tide mark across the chest.

4. Build the highlights

Pick out the upper curls
Where to paint: Wool
Screaming Skullcitadel · 22-33
Touch Screaming Skull onto the tops of selected curls with a small damp brush. Leave each shaded hollow untouched and reduce the number of marks towards the belly.
Expected result
Individual curls catch light while the wool keeps its depth.
Points to watch
Avoid a chalky blanket over every curl.
