Warm auramite gold and red cloth give the Custodes their ceremonial contrast. Dark weapon frames, cool steel blades and selective bright gold reflections keep the armour, fittings and working parts distinct.

Prime the seventh sword pose
Inspect the open stance for support scars, clean the sword edge and wash the miniature. After it dries, use Black Surface Primer from below before the normal side passes, so the inner legs and cloth do not remain bare.
Expected result
The black undercoat is complete through the open stance and remains fine on the sword and decorative trim.
Points to watch
Do not concentrate spray on the broad front armour or miss the rear face of the sword.

1. Prepare the model

Inspect the open stance for support scars, clean the sword edge and wash the miniature. After it dries, use Black Surface Primer from below before the normal side passes, so the inner legs and cloth do not remain bare.
Expected result
The black undercoat is complete through the open stance and remains fine on the sword and decorative trim.
Points to watch
Do not concentrate spray on the broad front armour or miss the rear face of the sword.

2. Apply the base colours

Base coat

Retributor Armourcitadel · 21-35
Cover the helmet, chest and shoulder domes with Retributor Armour, then move to the shield and the hands in front of the torso. Paint the gold guard blocks on either side of the vertical blade separately.
Expected result
Gold fully covers the armour and shield, and the square guard parts remain distinct from the silver blade.
Points to watch
Keep gold off the sword face, black elbow joints and the red cloth between the legs.
Base coat
Where to paint: Helmet plume and red tabard
Mephiston Redcitadel · 21-03
Fill the plume with Mephiston Red from root to pointed tips. Paint the central panel between the knees and the visible side streamers from the waist downward.
Expected result
Plume and cloth carry an even deep red, with the gold edges of the legs left clean.
Points to watch
Do not fill the dark separations between plume locks or run red beneath the round knee plates.
Base coat
Where to paint: Black armour joints and sword grip
Abaddon Blackcitadel · 21-25
Set the flexible joins and narrow visor with Abaddon Black. Restore the dark opening between the right hand and chest so the vertical blade stands clear of the figure.
Expected result
Black gaps separate the sword, arms and shoulder plates from one another.
Points to watch
Do not widen the cavity across the gold breastplate or cover the fingers beside the shield.
Base coat
Where to paint: Sword blade and exposed metal details
Leadbelchercitadel · 21-28
Paint Leadbelcher upward from the guard to the point, keeping the strokes parallel with the blade. Turn the figure to cover the side edge facing the shield.
Expected result
The silver blade rises evenly before the face with no black gaps at the guard or side edge.
Points to watch
Keep the gold guard blocks clean and preserve the fine separation between them.

3. Build the shadows

Reikland Fleshshadecitadel · 24-24
Place Reikland Fleshshade beneath the right shoulder and draw it through the breastplate seams. Separate each gold block of the guard with a short shadow without touching the vertical blade.
Expected result
The guard reads as several fitted parts, while the shield and chest keep broad clean gold surfaces.
Points to watch
Do not collect a brown pool at the bottom of the shield or darken the entire sword arm.

4. Build the highlights

Highlight

Liberator Goldcitadel · 22-71
Blend Liberator Gold around the upper arcs of the shoulder and helmet. Keep the shield highlight thin and mark only the guard corners that project in front of the blade.
Expected result
The head and upright sword become the focus, while the broad shield face stays quieter.
Points to watch
Do not light all four sides of every guard block or flatten the shield into one bright gold patch.
Highlight
Where to paint: Helmet plume and red tabard
Evil Sunz Scarletcitadel · 22-05
Use short, radiating Evil Sunz Scarlet strokes on the upper edges of the plume. Paint two soft vertical lights down the tabard, leaving its hem and side streamers darker.
Expected result
The plume looks sharp and layered, and the tabard keeps a clear downward fold direction.
Points to watch
Do not join the plume highlights into a solid crown or brighten the tabard hem scarlet.
Final point highlight
Where to paint: Sword blade and exposed metal details
Stormhost Silvercitadel · 22-75
Draw a narrow Stormhost Silver line up the right edge and strengthen it towards the point. On the opposite side, leave only one short mark near the guard to retain the blade's volume.
Expected result
One bright side emphasises the sword's height while the opposite face remains in a cool midtone.
Points to watch
Do not frame the blade symmetrically in white or widen the highlight across its centre.

5. Finish the model

Base coat
Where to paint: Ground texture and rim of the base
Abaddon Blackcitadel · 21-25
Work Abaddon Black around both soles, then join the painted areas along the open front edge. Use the tip beneath the rear cloth so paint does not pool there.
Expected result
The base is evenly black around the separated feet and beneath the hanging cloth.
Points to watch
Do not leave a pale sector behind the right heel or touch the red cloth edge.
