Alpaca — warm ivory knit

Warm ivory loops surround a softly blushed peach muzzle and inner ears. Sepia recess shadows and small crescent highlights preserve the alpaca's knitted texture, with the brightest light on the forehead and shoulders.

Clean the relief and apply primer
Carefully remove support marks without flattening the rounded loops. Clean the model as required for its material, complete any necessary curing, then let it dry. Brush away dust between the loops. Apply thin coats of Grey Surface Primer from several directions and let the primer dry fully.
Expected result
Primer covers the undersides as well as the front; every gap between loops remains open.
Points to watch
Do not sand away the sculpted knitted texture.

Expected result
Primer covers the undersides as well as the front; every gap between loops remains open.

2. Apply the base colours

Paint the knitted areas with two thin coats of Ushabti Bone, including the back, tail and feet. Mix four parts Ushabti Bone with one part Cadian Fleshtone for the smooth muzzle and inner ears. Paint the eyes, nose and mouth line with Rhinox Hide. Let each coat dry before adding the next.
Expected result
No grey primer shows between the cream loops or around the face.
Points to watch
Keep the peach mixture off the knitted forehead and outer ears.

Mix one part Seraphim Sepia with two parts Lahmian Medium. Guide a small amount into the gaps between loops. Use a clean damp brush to lift any pools from the rounded tops. Once dry, add a second small application beneath the chin, belly and tail. Restore any stained loop tops with Ushabti Bone.
Expected result
Warm brown gaps separate the cream loops without making the whole animal brown.
Points to watch
Do not flood the entire model with undiluted shade.

4. Build the highlights

Mix Ushabti Bone and Screaming Skull equally. Paint a small crescent on the upper side of each prominent loop, leaving the lower side shaded. Use Screaming Skull alone for a smaller crescent inside the first. Add a little White Scar only to the last highlights on the forehead, ear tips and shoulders. Keep the lower body a little warmer and darker.
Expected result
Light tops and shaded lower sides make the loops look rounded; the head is brighter than the feet.
Points to watch
Do not add fine fibres or turn every loop into a white dot.

5. Paint the details

Add a little Cadian Fleshtone to the peach base mixture and thin it with Lahmian Medium until translucent. Brush a faint blush beside the nose, below the eyes and inside the ears. Let it dry. Gradually mix Screaming Skull into the original base colour and highlight the upper cheeks, muzzle and chin with thin layers. Keep the transitions soft rather than outlining the cheeks.
Expected result
The face is smooth and warm, with no hard orange patches.

Keep the rosy colour out of the eye recesses and knitted loops.
Finish the eyes and nose

Darken the eyes with equal parts Rhinox Hide and Abaddon Black, staying inside their sculpted rims. Add one small White Scar reflection near the upper left of each eye. Keep the nose brown; mix a little Cadian Fleshtone into Rhinox Hide for a short highlight along its upper edge. Tidy the mouth line with a fine brown stroke.
Expected result
Both reflections sit on the same side; the nose remains distinct from the mouth.
Points to watch
Do not paint large white pupils or black rings around the cheeks.

6. Finish the model

Protect the finish

Once the paint is fully dry, apply a thin coat of Matt Varnish according to its instructions. Keep it from pooling between loops. After the matt coat has dried, put a small amount of Gloss Varnish on each eye. Leave the muzzle, knitted surfaces and feet matt.
Expected result
Only the eyes have a clear gloss reflection; the cream loops stay crisp.
Points to watch
Do not varnish wet paint or fill the facial recesses.
