Warm auramite gold and red cloth give the Custodes their ceremonial contrast. Dark weapon frames, cool steel blades and selective bright gold reflections keep the armour, fittings and working parts distinct.

Clean mould lines without rounding the spear blade. Wash the figure with warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly, then apply a thin coat of Black Surface Primer from several angles.
All surfaces are primed, including behind the spear.
Preserve the gaps around the gripping hand.

Where to paint: Guardian armour
Cover the armour and both gauntlets with thin Retributor Armour until the black undercoat no longer shows through. Include the two front medallions, the gun side plates and the small muzzle surround; leave the holes black.
Gold is opaque across the whole armour.
Keep the cloak and long shaft free of gold.
Where to paint: Cloak and hanging cloth
Cover the cloak, hanging cloth and visible crest with thin Mephiston Red. Paint all the way into the folds without touching the gold ornaments.
The cloth has a continuous red base.
Do not recolour the circular waist ornament.
Where to paint: Spear shaft and blade
Apply Abaddon Black along the complete shaft, the dark gun frame and visible armour joints.
The black shaft is covered from top to bottom.
Leave the side gun plates gold.
Where to paint: Spear shaft and blade
Paint both blade faces Leadbelcher, taking the steel colour up to the gold fitting without crossing it. The muzzle surround and side plates remain gold, not steel.
The blade is steel right up to its tip.
Do not paint over the gold around the muzzle or fill its black opening.
Where to paint: Spear bearer’s base
Paint the entire base Abaddon Black, including the narrow surface behind the cloak.
The base has an even black coat.
Keep paint away from the red hem.
Where to paint: Guardian armour
Guide Reikland Fleshshade beneath the raised shoulder bands, under the chest plate and around the knee guards. Keep it in the joins so the broad gold surfaces stay clean.
A fine brown shadow separates the plates without staining their centres.
Keep wash off the middle of the shoulders.
Where to paint: Cloak and hanging cloth
Apply Nuln Oil only inside the deepest folds and where the cloak disappears behind the legs.
Dark burgundy separates the cloth folds.
Avoid a heavy wash over the whole cloak.
Where to paint: Spear shaft and blade
Place a little Nuln Oil at the blade root. Pull it into the join with the mounting, keeping the rest of the steel face clean.
The blade root is darker than the cutting edge, with no tide mark across the steel.
Do not leave tide marks across the blade.
Where to paint: Guardian armour
Reapply thin Retributor Armour to the centres of the shoulders, chest, hands and medallions. Work up to the shaded joins without covering them; the gold should graduate into the brown shadow rather than end in a dirty wash mark.
The broad plates are clean gold and each recessed shadow remains visible.
Do not erase the dark strips beneath the shoulder bands.
Where to paint: Cloak and hanging cloth
Layer Mephiston Red back over the outward-facing folds. Keep the dark burgundy at their roots and beneath the hanging cloth; the raised fabric should return to red before the brighter highlights are added.
Red fabric meets burgundy shade without blotchy black patches.
Keep the shadow behind the forward leg intact.
Where to paint: Guardian armour
Build Liberator Gold over the upper shoulder curves, helmet crown, knuckles and forward knee. Let the strokes become shorter towards the brightest crest of each curve; retain the warmer gold around them.
Bright gold draws attention above the waist.
Leave the lower plate edges darker.
Where to paint: Cloak and hanging cloth
Use Evil Sunz Scarlet on the upper fold near the hip and the forward hanging fold. Keep the red highlight narrow but visible.
The cloth looks folded, not striped.
Do not outline the entire hem in scarlet.
Where to paint: Spear shaft and blade
Draw one Ironbreaker highlight along the lit cutting edge and finish with a small touch at the tip.
The blade edge is clear from a normal viewing distance.
Do not invent lightning or blade engravings.
Where to paint: Spear shaft and blade
Run a short Eshin Grey highlight down the front of the shaft above the hand.
The shaft stays darker than the blade.
Do not make the whole shaft grey.
Where to paint: Spear bearer’s base
Brush Eshin Grey thinly across the base top, leaving the rim matte black.
The base is quieter than the cloak and armour.
Do not add bright gravel dots.
Where to paint: Guardian armour
Mix a little Ironbreaker into Liberator Gold until it becomes a pale gold, not silver. Place short accents on the helmet ridge, the highest shoulder edges and the knuckles facing the light. These marks should occupy less space than the previous gold highlights.
The head and hands catch the eye without a silver outline around every plate.
Do not stipple the armour or add tiny scratches to this Epic-scale figure.
Where to paint: Spear bearer’s base
Turn the finished Guardian through front, side and rear views. Use Abaddon Black to remove stray gold from the shoulder gaps, spear shaft and muzzle opening, and tidy the base rim below the feet. If this reveals an unfinished red or gold area, return to its colour step before calling the figure complete.
The gold hands, red cloak and steel blade remain distinct from the black fittings in every view.
Do not widen black joins enough to erase the small gold finger plates.
