Warm auramite gold and red cloth give the Custodes their ceremonial contrast. Dark weapon frames, cool steel blades and selective bright gold reflections keep the armour, fittings and working parts distinct.

Remove mould lines, then wash the miniature in warm soapy water, rinse and let it dry fully. Apply a thin coat of Black Surface Primer, reaching behind the raised caliver as well.
The recess behind the gun is covered without clogging.
Keep primer out of the muzzle opening.

Where to paint: Sagittarum base
Coat the base top and rim with Abaddon Black, working carefully around both boots.
No primer shows around the boots or rim.
Keep black off the gold toe plates.
Where to paint: Auramite plates
Apply two thin coats of Retributor Armour to the armour, armoured fingers, both round medallions and the gold side plates of the caliver.
The gold covers evenly and the plate edges stay sharp.
Leave the central gun frame and cloth outside the gold areas.
Where to paint: Crest and thigh cloth
Paint the crest and all exposed cloth with two thin coats of Mephiston Red. Work around the gold waist disc rather than painting over it.
Only the cloth and crest are red.
Keep the round buckle gold.
Where to paint: Caliver frame and muzzle
Paint the central gun block and exposed armour joints Abaddon Black. The outer gold plates are already finished in their base colour.
Black sections have clean borders against the gold.
Do not turn the armoured fingers black.

Apply Leadbelcher to the protruding barrel, keeping its bore black.
The barrel is steel, with a dark open muzzle.
Keep silver off the neighbouring gold collar.
Where to paint: Auramite plates
Apply Reikland Fleshshade sparingly beneath overlapping plates and around the medallions. Wick away any pool before it dries.
Brown shadows separate the gold plates.
Do not stain the broad chest plate.
Where to paint: Crest and thigh cloth
Place a little Nuln Oil in the cloth folds and at the root of the crest.
The red deepens to burgundy in the folds.
Do not flood the tiny skirt with wash.
Where to paint: Caliver frame and muzzle
Run Nuln Oil around the barrel base and beneath the muzzle lip.
The barrel remains lighter than its recess.
Do not fill the bore with a puddle.
Where to paint: Sagittarum base
Apply a thin Eshin Grey layer across the exposed base top. Leave the edge beside the boots and the whole rim black.
A quiet charcoal base frames the gold figure.
Do not add large stones or painted grit.
Where to paint: Auramite plates
Use a small amount of Liberator Gold on the helmet crown, upper shoulder curves and raised knee. Keep each highlight broad enough to see on this tiny figure.
The head and upper armour catch the eye first.
Do not add speckling or rows of tiny silver dots.
Where to paint: Crest and thigh cloth
Add one restrained Evil Sunz Scarlet highlight along the crest top and the foremost cloth fold.
The raised red details stand out against the darker cloth.
Stop before the red becomes orange.
Where to paint: Caliver frame and muzzle
Touch Ironbreaker to the upper muzzle rim only.
One small glint defines the firing end.
Avoid a bright silver ring around the entire muzzle.

Add a short Eshin Grey line along the top edge of the black gun block.
The gun stays black but its shape is clear.
Keep the lower edges dark.
