Clean the miniature and apply primer
Remove support marks and dust, then clean the miniature as appropriate for its material. Let it dry completely; resin must already be washed and cured. Apply Grey Surface Primer in thin coats, reaching beneath the hair and between the fingers without filling the detail.
Expected result
The primer is even and the fine grooves remain open.
Points to watch
Do not force the thin sword or fingers while cleaning.

1. Prepare the model

Clean the miniature and apply primer

Remove support marks and dust, then clean the miniature as appropriate for its material. Let it dry completely; resin must already be washed and cured. Apply Grey Surface Primer in thin coats, reaching beneath the hair and between the fingers without filling the detail.
Expected result
The primer is even and the fine grooves remain open.

2. Apply the base colours

Lay in the warm ivory

Mix Zandri Dust and Ushabti Bone in roughly equal parts. Cover the armour and hilt with two thin coats, keeping the ribbed joints clear.
Expected result
No grey primer shows through the ivory areas.
Points to watch
Keep the recessed neck seal separate from the mask.
Paint the red hair
Where to paint: Crimson hair
Mephiston Redcitadel · 21-03
Paint every lock with Mephiston Red, turning the figure to reach the underside. Keep the grooves visible rather than filling them with a heavy coat.
Expected result
The hair is red from the roots to the tips.
Points to watch
Do not carry red onto the ivory mask rim.
Paint the green cloth
Where to paint: Emerald cloth
Caliban Greencitadel · 21-12
Cover the waist panel and hanging cloth with Caliban Green. Use a fine point around the belt stones and the ivory borders.
Expected result
The cloth has an even dark-green base.
Points to watch
Keep the raised belt settings ivory.
Separate the flexible joints

Abaddon Blackcitadel · 21-25
Paint the flexible joints, palms and grip with Abaddon Black. Work between the ivory finger plates instead of covering the whole hand.
Expected result
The armour plates remain separate from the dark flexible parts.
Points to watch
Do not turn the smooth forearm or shin plates black.
Basecoat the steel blade
Where to paint: Black joints and steel blade

Apply thin Leadbelcher across the blade planes, stopping at the ivory guard. Keep the cut edge sharp and free of paint buildup.
Expected result
The blade is steel-coloured and its bevel is clear.
Points to watch
Do not paint the hilt or grip silver.

3. Build the shadows

Run a little Agrax Earthshade into the armour seams and around the raised ornaments. Wick away any pool on the broad chest or shoulder plates with a clean damp brush.
Expected result
Warm shadows separate the plates without staining their centres.

Do not wash the whole ivory surface brown.
Deepen the hair roots

Khorne Redcitadel · 21-04
Darken Khorne Red with a small amount of Abaddon Black and thin it until it flows from the brush. Paint the deepest grooves and the shaded underside, leaving Mephiston Red on the raised locks.
Expected result
Individual locks remain readable even on the shaded side.
Points to watch
Avoid broad black stripes across the hair.
Deepen the cloth folds

Mix a little Abaddon Black into Caliban Green. With a lightly loaded brush, shade the fold valleys and the cloth beneath the belt; soften the outer edge with clean Caliban Green.
Expected result
The folds have depth while the cloth still reads as green.
Points to watch
Leave room for the green midtone between shadow and highlight.
Shade the steel planes

Apply a thin Nuln Oil glaze to the inner blade plane and beneath the upper ridge. Keep the bevel clean, and let the shade dry fully.
Expected result
The shaded steel is dark but not stained or cloudy.

Do not add lightning cracks or change the blade outline.

4. Build the highlights

Restore Ushabti Bone on the raised plates, then add Screaming Skull to successive thin layers. Concentrate the light on the mask, upper chest, shoulders and forward knee. Keep the deepest seams untouched.
Expected result
The mask is the brightest ivory area and the plate curves remain smooth.
Points to watch
Avoid a white outline of equal strength around every plate.
Highlight the flowing locks

Draw thin Evil Sunz Scarlet highlights along the upward-facing ridges of the hair. Add short Wild Rider Red accents near the crown and on a few upper tips, leaving the lower locks darker.
Expected result
The red remains rich, with the brightest strands near the head.
Points to watch
Do not turn every strand orange from root to tip.
Bring out the green folds

The cloth has smooth emerald highlights rather than bright green stripes.
Points to watch
Do not highlight the deep folds as brightly as their crests.
Reveal the black details

Use Eshin Grey on the upper ribs of the joints and the exposed edges of the palms and grip. Add only a few tiny Dawnstone marks where the light catches most strongly.

Leave the channels between the ribs black.
Catch the upper bevel with silver

5. Paint the details

Dark red bases for the stones

The stones look rounded, with a single crisp reflection each.

Keep the reflection small enough to leave the red visible.
Finish the turquoise lenses

Fill the eye recesses with Sotek Green. Add a thin Temple Guard Blue accent along the lower edge of each visible lens, keeping all colour inside the sculpted rim.

Do not paint turquoise glow across the faceplate.

Do not dull the finished highlights with another all-over wash.
