Blue-grey knitted elephant

Blue-grey knitted relief is softened by mauve inner ears and pale warm feet. Dark sheltered loops and lighter forehead stitches give the elephant texture without filling the carved pattern.

Prepare the knitted relief
Inspect the trunk tip and ear borders for support marks. Remove dust from the carved loops; wash away grease if present, rinse and dry completely. Brush on a thin coat of Vallejo Grey Surface Primer, clearing any pools between the loops.
Expected result
The dry grey coat leaves every loop and the gap beneath the trunk open.
Points to watch
Do not scrub across the projecting ear edges.

1. Prepare the model

Inspect the trunk tip and ear borders for support marks. Remove dust from the carved loops; wash away grease if present, rinse and dry completely. Brush on a thin coat of Vallejo Grey Surface Primer, clearing any pools between the loops.
Expected result
The dry grey coat leaves every loop and the gap beneath the trunk open.
Points to watch
Do not scrub across the projecting ear edges.

2. Apply the base colours

Establish the blue body
Where to paint: Blue-grey knit

Cover the blue-grey areas with The Fang, following the rows of relief with a lightly loaded brush. Continue around the back and between the forelegs, leaving the inner ears and round foot ends for their own colours.
Expected result
An even blue foundation covers the body without bridging the knit grooves.
Points to watch
Do not leave a grey strip behind either ear.
Colour the inner ears
Where to paint: Lilac inner ears
Genestealer Purplecitadel · 22-10
Apply Genestealer Purple inside the framed ear centres. Bring the point up to the blue border and pull inward so the brush does not climb over the raised rim.
Expected result
Both centres are purple, bounded by an unbroken blue frame.
Points to watch
Keep purple away from the head where the ears attach.
Give the feet a warm foundation
Where to paint: Pale feet
Rakarth Fleshcitadel · 21-27
Paint Rakarth Flesh over the forward foot ends, stopping where their rounded faces turn back into the blue legs. Follow the existing knit relief without drawing a new seam.
Expected result
The feet have matching warm-grey ends with clean colour boundaries.
Points to watch
Do not turn the whole legs pale.

3. Build the shadows

Deepen sheltered blue relief
Where to paint: Blue-grey knit
Nuln Oilcitadel · 24-14
Place Nuln Oil only in the blue recesses sheltered by the ears, trunk and hanging forelegs. Draw excess away from the broad forehead; let the naturally dark underside stay stronger than the face.
Expected result
The hanging limbs separate from the belly and the forehead stays blue.
Points to watch
Do not wash the entire head into a grey-black mesh.

4. Build the highlights

Light the face and upper body
Where to paint: Blue-grey knit
Fenrisian Greycitadel · 22-68
Brush thin Fenrisian Grey over the raised loops across the crown and front of the trunk. Taper the light towards the sides; touch the upper ear rims and shoulders more lightly so the head remains the focus.
Expected result
The broad volumes read clearly and dark grooves still separate the loops.
Points to watch
Do not pick out every loop with the same bright outline.
Soften the violet ears
Where to paint: Lilac inner ears
Rakarth Fleshcitadel · 21-27
Lay translucent Rakarth Flesh over the tops of the violet loops, concentrating on the upper centres. The purple must remain visible beneath the thin paint and inside the grooves, giving a muted mauve rather than beige.
Expected result
The inner ears are softly mauve, with violet remaining between the loops.
Points to watch
Stop if the ears begin to look cream.
Round the pale feet
Where to paint: Pale feet
Pallid Wych Fleshcitadel · 22-58
Draw Pallid Wych Flesh across the upper rows of each pale foot end, keeping the bottom rows in Rakarth Flesh. Let the light fade towards the blue join so the feet look rounded rather than capped with white.
Expected result
Both feet remain warm grey with a restrained pale upper curve.
Points to watch
Do not make the feet brighter than the elephant forehead.

5. Finish the model

Tidy the colour joins
Where to paint: Blue-grey knit
The Fangcitadel · 21-32
Correct stray purple or pale marks with The Fang along the blue ear frames and foot joins. Turn the model to inspect its back and underside; return to the relevant colour step for any missed relief.
Expected result
The colour joins are clean and no visible primer remains.
Points to watch
Do not add eyes or tusks to the deliberately eyeless sculpt.
