Reek — natural russet hide and ivory horn

Russet hide surrounds dark dorsal nodules and pale ivory horns on the Reek. Warm mouth tissue and selective shoulder highlights bring the creature's heavy skin folds forward without brightening every surface.

Prepare the Reek for paint
Remove loose print residue and smooth any support marks, taking care around the horns. Wash the model in warm soapy water, rinse and dry it thoroughly. Apply Grey Surface Primer in light passes, including beneath the belly and inside the open mouth.
Expected result
The whole creature has a thin primer coat; teeth and skin folds remain distinct.
Points to watch
Do not build up primer between the teeth or at the horn roots.

1. Prepare the model

Remove loose print residue and smooth any support marks, taking care around the horns. Wash the model in warm soapy water, rinse and dry it thoroughly. Apply Grey Surface Primer in light passes, including beneath the belly and inside the open mouth.
Expected result
The whole creature has a thin primer coat; teeth and skin folds remain distinct.
Points to watch
Do not build up primer between the teeth or at the horn roots.

2. Apply the base colours

Lay down the hide colour

Mournfang Browncitadel · 21-20
Paint all exposed hide with thin coats of Mournfang Brown until the grey primer no longer shows through. Include the belly, inner legs and skin beneath the jaw.
Expected result
The skin is evenly brown, including the sheltered areas.
Points to watch
Keep the horns, claws and mouth clear of brown.
Paint the dark dorsal armour
Where to paint: Armoured nodules along the brow and back
Rhinox Hidecitadel · 21-22
Pick out the raised protective nodules with Rhinox Hide, following their edges so the skin between them stays russet.
Expected result
Each dark nodule is distinct from the surrounding hide.
Points to watch
Do not paint the whole back as a solid black saddle.
Start the horn and claw colour
Where to paint: Horns, claws and teeth
Zandri Dustcitadel · 21-16
Apply Zandri Dust to all horns, claws and individual teeth. Use the tip of the brush around the mouth to preserve the dark gaps.
Expected result
The horns, claws and teeth have an even sandy base.
Points to watch
Do not join the teeth into a single pale bar.
Paint the mouth interior

Carefully paint the tongue and visible mouth lining with Khorne Red. Keep the teeth separate.
Expected result
The mouth has a deep red interior and clean tooth edges.
Points to watch
Do not spread red over the outer jaw.
Paint the eye black
Where to paint: Visible eye

Fill the sculpted eye with Abaddon Black, stopping at the eyelid.
Expected result
The eye is a neat black oval inside the lid.

Do not enlarge the eye with paint.

3. Build the shadows

Deepen the skin folds

Apply Agrax Earthshade to the folds beneath the neck, along the belly and behind the knees. Draw excess wash out with a clean brush before it dries.
Expected result
The folds are dark, while the broad flanks remain free of tide marks.
Points to watch
Do not soak the entire flank in shade.
Separate the dorsal nodules
Where to paint: Armoured nodules along the brow and back
Agrax Earthshadecitadel · 24-15
Apply Agrax Earthshade along the lower edges of the dark nodules. Guide it into their joins without coating the surrounding russet skin or the upper surfaces.
Expected result
Dark joins separate the nodules while their tops remain brown.
Points to watch
Do not flood the broad back.
Shade the horn roots
Where to paint: Horns, claws and teeth
Seraphim Sepiacitadel · 24-23
Brush Seraphim Sepia into the horn grooves and around the roots of the claws and teeth. Keep the tips comparatively clean.
Expected result
Warm shadows remain near the roots and inside the grooves.
Points to watch
Remove droplets hanging from the tusk tips.

4. Build the highlights

Restore the brown between the folds

Mournfang Browncitadel · 21-20
Use Mournfang Brown to cover any shade marks on the broad skin surfaces. Leave Agrax Earthshade in the deep folds, preserving a clean brown area for the lighter layers.
Expected result
Broad surfaces are brown without stain rings.
Points to watch
Keep the deepest folds dark.
Bring out the shoulders and legs

Skrag Browncitadel · 22-40
Mix a little Skrag Brown into Mournfang Brown. Build translucent layers on the shoulders, cheeks and outer legs, narrowing each pass towards the upper curves. Keep the broad lower flanks in the original brown.
Expected result
The shoulders look rounded and the highlights follow the sculpted folds.
Points to watch
Do not drybrush pale paint over every bump or invent extra scratches.
Catch the upper edges of the nodules
Where to paint: Armoured nodules along the brow and back
Baneblade Browncitadel · 22-48
Rhinox Hidecitadel · 21-22
Lighten Rhinox Hide with a little Baneblade Brown. Touch this mix onto the upper edges of the larger nodules, leaving their lower edges dark.
Expected result
The armour catches a muted light without looking metallic.
Points to watch
Avoid a bright outline around every plate.
Lighten the horn ridges
Where to paint: Horns, claws and teeth
Ushabti Bonecitadel · 22-32
Layer Ushabti Bone along the raised horn ridges towards the tips. Add small strokes of the same paint to the top of each claw and tooth.
Expected result
The horns grade from warm roots to pale tips.
Points to watch
Follow the existing ridges; do not paint a web of new cracks.
Lift the tongue colour
Where to paint: Tongue and the inside of the mouth

Cadian Fleshtonecitadel · 22-36
Add a little Cadian Fleshtone to Khorne Red and highlight the raised middle of the tongue. Leave the back of the mouth dark.
Expected result
A small muted pink highlight separates the tongue from the throat.
Points to watch
Avoid a bright pink outline around the entire mouth.
Add the last skin highlights

Baneblade Browncitadel · 22-48
Add a little Baneblade Brown to the Mournfang Brown and Skrag Brown mix. Paint narrow highlights on the upper cheek and the highest folds of the shoulders and front legs. Leave the larger warm layers visible around each highlight.
Expected result
Small pale accents sit within the warm, rounded skin highlights.
Points to watch
Do not highlight every wrinkle equally.

5. Paint the details

Add the eye reflection

Place one tiny White Scar dot near the upper front of the black eye. Use a brush with a sharp point and very little paint.
Expected result
One small reflection makes the eye look wet.
Points to watch
Keep the reflection much smaller than the eye.

6. Finish the model

Check the whole creature and clean the skin edges

Mournfang Browncitadel · 21-20
Inspect the Reek from the front, sides, rear and underneath. Check the belly, all claws, horn roots and the mouth for missed areas; return to the relevant colour step if needed. Use Mournfang Brown to cover stray bone or red paint on the skin beside these details, keeping the established shadows intact.
Expected result
Every visible material is covered and the skin boundaries are tidy.
Points to watch
Do not add a base or invent extra skin texture.
