Give the small engine a clean, even foundation without closing its vents or toe gaps.
Inspect the carapace grille, both weapon muzzles and the narrow gaps around each toe under a side light. Remove loose print dust, wash the model in warm water with a drop of dish soap, rinse it and let it dry completely. Apply Grey Surface Primer in several light passes, turning the Warhound so the weapon undersides and rear of the ankles receive the same thin coat as the top.
Expected result
The primer is smooth and matte, and every vent, muzzle and joint line remains sharp.
Points to watch
Do not spray a wet coat into the top grille or let primer collect between the square toes.

Cover the grey armour with two thin coats of Eshin Grey. Mix in a little Dawnstone and place the lighter grey on the upper halves of the carapace slabs and the forward shoulders, following the flat planes rather than tracing every edge.
Expected result
The armour reads as one cool grey mass with a gentle lift across the top-facing planes.
Points to watch
Keep grey away from the yellow head plates, knee guards, gun housings and open grille.

3. Build the shadows

Separate the heavy plates and pick out only the corners that carry the light.

With a fine brush, run Nuln Oil through the carapace seams and around the grille frame, then remove any spill before it dries. Restore Dawnstone beside the cleanest seams. Add Administratum Grey only to the foremost carapace corners and the upper lip above the head.
Expected result
The plates are clearly separated from arm's length, while the pale grey appears only on the forward top corners.
Points to watch
Do not wash entire panels and do not frame every plate with the same pale outline.

4. Build the highlights

Make the head and lower legs readable as one muted yellow identification colour.

Build Yellow Ochre 70.913 in two thin coats. Place Agrax Earthshade only beneath the cheek plates, inside the shin joins and along the lower edge of each toe cap. Return Yellow Ochre to the centre of every plate, then add Basic Yellow 62.003 to the upper third of the snout and the forward edges of the shins.
Expected result
The yellow plates are solid and warm, with shadows at their lower joins and a brighter forward edge.
Points to watch
Do not brighten the entire plate with Basic Yellow or paint hazard stripes too fine to read at this scale.

5. Paint the details

Give the guns and exposed joints a darker, harder material than the armour shell.

Paint the weapon casings Abaddon Black and the barrels, pistons and pivot rings Leadbelcher. Shade the metal with Nuln Oil, keeping the muzzle openings truly black. When dry, use Ironbreaker on the barrel rings, piston rods and the upper edges of the toe hinges, leaving the inner joints dark.
Expected result
The weapons read as dark steel, moving parts are visible, and the open muzzles remain clean circles.
Points to watch
Do not drybrush silver across the grey armour or fill the muzzle openings with metallic paint.

6. Add effects and weathering

Suggest repeated movement without covering the small engine in full-size scratches.

Use the point of a fine brush to place a handful of Chipping Brown 69.035 chips, each smaller than the nearest panel seam. Add Ironbreaker to the front edge of only two or three marks. Finish with a very thin Agrax Earthshade stain at the back of the feet, where dust and grease would collect.
Expected result
Wear points forward, the feet carry a little grime, and most armour panels remain clean.
Points to watch
Do not sponge random chips over the carapace or paint long streaks down the legs.
